What would be a good place to start for a non-Hindu wanting to get an idea of the Hindu concept of God? By this I mean which religious texts (the Upanishads?). Any number of texts will be fine. At the same time, does any member here know of any good text books that explain this sort of thing, preferably with references to the religious texts themselves (there are tons of books on 'Hinduism', but I anticipate that many such books will be inaccurate and make lots of generalizations, and I'd also rather read a book that comes recommended by actual Hindus).

Any help will be much appreciated.

Srimad Bhagavatham is a good start.

If you wanna learn abt Hinduism from the ground up, read these books:

Spiritual Heritage of India - Swami Prabavananda
Purna Vidya - Vison of Hindu Dharma - Swamini Pramananda Saraswati & Sri Dhira Chaitanya.

You cant jump straight into reading the Gita or the Upanishads. They are to be taught by proper teachers to students. Cos they contain very lofty ideas/philosophies which a beginner may nt grasp well or grasp wrongly.

Its always good to start from learning abt the fundementals of the religion and how it was formed, its tenents etc rather then reading spiritual works.

I am confident the 2 books above would give you great information.

try any and see which of them makes you comfortable...

pl do listen to different people, think about what is being stated by them.
Sometimes one may find it difficult to understand what is being stated. In such a case, it is better to look for another - The reason for such a situation is the level difference - sometimes, a professor teaching the grad or post grad students cannot go down to the level of 3rd standard students.

all the best and enjoy your journey

cheers

Gupta Ji

Yes, i attend Hinduism classes in Singapore. And we are given books/texts to read and materials which are used to conduct classes.

But thats not the only reason. I feel Hinduism is soooo large and diverse. I feel it would be usefull for any student of the religion to start from non biased basics, where they learn in general the tenents of Hinduism.

Once they understand the principles, they can then read specific literature of their choice like Gita, Upanishads, etc.

If everyone jumps straight into the specific texts without learning the basics of teh religion, it will be like throwing a F maths book to a pre school kid. They wont understand and it would destroy their quest for knowledge.

Dear Blessed Souls,

There are many things like these which are not clear in our daily lives. We need to first understand the basics of the sanatana dharma revealed in Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta.

Question yourself - how can god (Krishna) ask Arjun to kill other human beings (kauravas) in the battle? can god ask you to kill someone?

to have a better perception in life, please try to listen to Yatharth Geeta. You can download free MP3's from this site www.yatharthgeeta.com (presently they have audio in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and Bengali). OR if you want to get a preview you can also listen to the English, Hindi and Gujrati versions of the same on youtube. Here are the urls for the same

Good Luck!
